Postcard: Hearst Castle

The springtime always makes me think of Hearst Castle. We had a few family trips to San Simeon during our spring breaks from school many years ago, and the romance of the place has been settled in my soul ever since. Old Hollywood, politics, yellow journalism, the treasures of ancient eras, and scandals - all under one roof! It is one of my all-time favorite places in all of California, if not the world.

Here is the beautiful Roman Pool - kept indoors in deep lapis and gold mosaic, with alabaster fixtures throughout. This is the spot that Clark Gable thought was the best place for late-night rendezvous, and one can see why! Confession: I think this postcard has been in my collection since our first visit there, which makes it probably 20 or more years old. Even as a little girl I was totally infatuated with the place. Where does the time go?

This is also my very favorite place at Hearst Castle. It's SO beautiful, how could it not be? My second favorite room was the Rectory. I coveted that huge dining room table!
